Since kicking off its Fit for Life program on March 3rd, Dayton Metro Library has already distributed over 3,000 pedometers to participants along with success-logs to track their progress. With support and donations from a number of community partners, the library has been able to provide 300 weekly prizes, attracting participants to nearly 30 programs throughout the system. A range of activities are available, from ballroom dancing to boxing, rock climbing, stress management, yoga and fencing, with more on the way! Among the most popular of these events has been the Fit for Life Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) Tournament for teens. Winners from each library branch will compete for prizes and the honor of DDR Champion of Dayton will be presented at the annual RiverBlast event in Downtown Dayton on Memorial Day weekend. While teens have been the most engaged, librarians at the branches report that entire families are participating in Fit for Life. A mother at West Carrollton Library expressed her gratitude for the library’s Fit for Life campaign. She and her two children were so motivated by the program that they ran out of pages in their success-logs and had to ask for more. “They are having a ball with it,” she remarked. Dayton Metro Library used a number of tactics to promote its programs. Physical education teachers have urged students to get involved, and partner organizations in the community have helped distribute information. Perhaps the best promoters of Fit for Life programs at the library have been the teens themselves. At one branch, a teenager who regularly uses library computers to play games not only recruited his friends but his mother too and has been telling other teens at the computers that they should join too. Many young people have gotten involved after seeing other students wearing pedometers at school. Excited teens, involved families, and new partnerships in the community have made Dayton Metro’s Fit for Life programs hugely successful both for participants and for the library. “This has been an exciting new venture for our library,” said Travis Bautz, Adult Services Manager and co-coordinator of the Fit for Life program. “We’ve interacted in new ways with patrons of all ages, while providing a positive community service.”
